The backbone is a light aliphatic C10-C13 base with a minimal aromatic content. On top of that sits the kerosene fraction as a diluent and a glycol solvent that helps deal with deposits. Nothing exotic. It is a classic solvent blend tuned to work fast, in a few minutes.

How Bardahl works - solvent or detergent?
Solvent. Look at the composition: more than half the volume is light aliphatic hydrocarbons, plus kerosene and a glycol ether. That is a base that thins the oil and dissolves sludge and soft deposits in the galleries. It works mechanically and chemically through dilution, not through an elaborate detergent-dispersant package the way a motor oil does.
One technical caveat here. A safety data sheet classifies hazards and composition only. It says nothing about “cleaning power”. My conclusion that this is a solvent product comes from what the product is chemically, not from some line about efficacy. A solvent-kerosene base cleans fast and that is its strong side. Its weak side flows from the same nature: a base like this degreases and thins the oil film, and it adds no lubricating additives of its own. That is exactly why short flushes run for a few minutes at idle, not under load.
This is where the old workshop complaint about “kerosene” products comes from, and the anti-myth “do not pour raw kerosene into an engine”. Careful though: Bardahl is not raw kerosene. How to use Bardahl Engine Flush?
The method is simple and the same as for most short flushes. Warm the engine to operating temperature. Pour the whole can into the warm, old oil, before you drain it. Leave the engine at idle for a few to a dozen or so minutes, do not rev it, do not move the car. Then drain the oil along with the dissolved deposits, change the filter and fill with fresh oil.
A few points from practice. The manufacturer sizes the 300 ml can for one oil change, it is a ready dose, do not split it or pour part of it. Do not leave the flush in “for good measure”, because this is not a product to drive on. The manufacturer states that the turbo variant is fine and that the catalytic converter is not harmed. I give no ml-per-litre ratios here, because the safety data sheet does not define such doses, and I will not invent them. Follow the instructions on the packaging.

For the catalytic converter and the turbocharger the manufacturer declares compatibility, so by the maker’s word the product does not threaten the hardware under normal use. The hazards on the sheet are mainly about handling the liquid, not about wrecking the engine. Kerosene carries Flam. Liq. Tox. Practical takeaway: keep it away from flame, never siphon it by mouth, work in a ventilated spot, wear gloves.
When to tread carefully? This is a general rule for any short flush, not just Bardahl. A very high-mileage engine, with a thick layer of carbon holding old seals in place, and a suspected leak, is the situation where aggressive dissolving of deposits can expose a weep that the sludge had been masking. A solvent flush does not “break” anything, but it washes out what sat in the gaps. If the engine already sweats oil, weigh the risk before you scrub it clean.
A separate matter: the DPF. Engine Flush is not a product for the diesel particulate filter. Bardahl has a different preparation for that, DPF/FAP & Turbo Cleaner (art. 1042B), added to the fuel.
