You get up in the morning, rushing to work, hurriedly get into your car, and an unpleasant surprise awaits you - a problem starting it. This is one of the most frustrating problems for car owners, and it can be caused by many factors. The causes can be traced to many components - the starter, the battery, the ignition switch, the fuel filter and fuel pump, or the spark plugs. Today I will try to briefly walk you through the most common situations in which a problem with starting the engine may occur.
Car is hard to start - fuel pump problems?
Trouble starting the engine is a very troublesome problem for every driver. A situation in which we are in a hurry somewhere and the car refuses to move is extremely frustrating and stressful. It is obvious that we want to avoid this at all costs, and to that end it is worth finding out what causes the car not to start. There are plenty of causes - from trivial to quite serious.
For the engine to start properly, an adequate dose of fuel is essential. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering it from the tank to the injectors.
A common symptom indicating that the problem lies with the fuel pump is also the engine dying right after starting or after pressing the accelerator. Modern pumps are electrically powered, which is why the fuses and contacts can fail. There are also frequently mechanical problems caused by poor fuel quality or driving on a low fuel level - proper lubrication, cooling, and protection of the fuel pump against contaminants are essential. Its failure may be indicated by the absence of the characteristic sound that signals proper drawing of fuel from the tank.
The condition of the filter will also directly affect its operation - if it is clogged, it can lead to the pump’s failure. The problem may also be caused by the poor quality of the fuel itself. A poor mixture will also cause uneven, loud engine operation, significantly increased fuel consumption, a drop in the car’s performance, as well as increased smoke from the exhaust pipe.
Car starts poorly - clogged fuel filter
A contaminated fuel filter can also be a cause of problems with starting the engine. Reduced fuel throughput means that an insufficient amount of this operating fluid reaches the injectors, which makes ignition difficult. In the case of such a problem, we will also notice uneven engine operation, increased fuel consumption, loss of power, or smoke from the exhaust pipe {link to another article}.
Car is hard to start in the morning - the spark plugs may be to blame
Spark plugs are some of the smallest and cheapest consumable parts in a car, and we often forget about them. And yet they perform one of the most important tasks - they initiate the ignition of the fuel in the cylinder, which makes it possible to start the car. If we have a problem with the car starting properly, we should immediately check, check the operation of the ignition leads and spark plugs - wear of the electrodes on the spark plug increases the distance the spark has to travel, which contributes to extending the time of cranking the shaft before ignition and proper engine operation occur.
Engine is hard to start - don’t forget about the battery
To some this may seem obvious and not worth mentioning, but we often look for complicated solutions even when there is no need. And the problem may be seemingly trivial, as in this case - an uncharged battery.
The starter in the car draws a large amount of current and gives the crankshaft the appropriate rotational speed, which allows the engine to begin operating on its own. An adequately charged battery is essential for this, which is why we should not forget to always keep it at sufficient power. This seems obvious, yet we can forget about it, and it is very important especially during the winter period.
In winter conditions the battery is particularly burdened by greater energy consumption if you use systems such as seat or window heating. In sub-zero temperatures the performance of the car’s battery drops significantly, and often even a new one refuses to cooperate. In frost the density of the oil also increases, which creates greater resistance to starting - which is why winter is a hard period for every driver.
Sometimes the problem does not lie with the battery itself - the cables can also be damaged. It is worth checking whether the connection to the starter has been broken and whether the current is reaching it at the proper voltage. The ignition switch may also be damaged, as it wears out over time and is a frequent cause of difficulties in starting the engine. It often becomes hot, which may indicate a problem with its wiring.
Problem with the alternator
If a problem with starting the engine occurs repeatedly, it is worth checking whether the alternator is working properly. It is responsible for the ongoing power supply to the car’s equipment as well as recharging the battery while driving by converting mechanical energy into electric current. It is mounted directly to the engine, and it is connected to the crankshaft that drives it by a multi-groove belt.
A damaged alternator in a car means an interruption in the supply of current to the car’s electrical system, which will lead to the battery discharging, causing the car to be hard to start on a cold engine, or making it completely impossible to restart the vehicle.
Problems starting your car? Solve the problem as soon as possible!
If you know what to expect, it is easier to diagnose the cause when a problem with starting the engine appears. It is then worth reacting immediately and not letting the fault deepen and lead to serious damage. This way we will avoid paying the high amounts we would have to spend on repairs. It is always worth taking care of the engine in your car, and it especially needs this during the winter period. Numerous products available on the market will help with this, containing ingredients that make starting easier in unfavorable conditions and protect the engine. They are, however, only a support - the most important thing is regular servicing and checking of all the systems responsible for the proper operation of the vehicle.
