Short answer: Motul runs on a light hydrocarbon solvent. It bites into deposits harder, so it’s the bottle for a neglected engine with stubborn sludge. Mannol 9900 sits on an oil-and-paraffin base - gentler, the lowest hazard profile of the two, better for an older engine with tired seals. The base tells you which one: solvent or oil.

High-mileage engine in front of you, oil change due, and while you’re in there anyway you want to rinse out whatever’s built up over the last 15,000 kilometres. Two flushes on the shelf: Motul (French brand) and Mannol (German brand, SCT-Vertriebs GmbH). Same little 300 ml bottle, same “pour in before the oil change.” Open the safety data sheets (SDS), though, and they’re not the same thing at all. Two different ideas about how to clean. That’s the part that decides which bottle belongs in your engine.

I’m going through both by what the actual SDS documents list, not by the marketing on the label. Where a sheet doesn’t disclose something, I’ll say so: no data.

What actually separates Motul from Mannol?

It’s the carrier base that splits them. Motul, in its mainstream European trim (Engine Clean Auto), sits on light hydrocarbons C10-C13 with an aromatic content below 2% (the sheet puts them at 50-<100%), plus a paraffinic fraction (hydrotreated light distillate, CAS 64742-55-8, 10-25% in the DE 2023 sheet). Solvent-forward, in other words. The carrier is there to dissolve deposits.

Mannol Motor Flush 9900 goes the other way. The Polish version (MN9900-035ME, 2023) is built on a heavy hydrotreated paraffinic distillate (CAS 64742-54-7, below 95%). The Italian version of the same flush (350 ml) is mineral oil with calcium sulfonate, and the only classified ingredient there is a trace surfactant, ethoxylated isotridecanol (CAS 69011-36-5), below 0.5%. So: an oil-and-paraffin base, not a straight solvent.

What’s that mean at the drain plug? The solvent (Motul) goes after soft varnish and sludge harder. The oil base (Mannol) is gentler - it rinses, carries the detergent around, doesn’t really bite into the deposit. Neither one cleans the engine on its own, and neither undoes mechanical wear. They both touch one thing: deposits, soft sludge and varnish.

What does an engine flush actually remove, and why does the base matter?

A flush works on what builds up in the oil circuit: soft sludge and varnish. Sludge is gelled, half-oxidised oil mixed with water and combustion by-products - soft, but sticky. Varnish is thinner, a film that clings to hot metal, on the pistons and around the ring pack. The flush loosens those layers so they drain out with the old oil.

And here’s where the base matters again. A solvent carrier (Motul, light hydrocarbons C10-C13) soaks into the deposit and dissolves it - it works on the varnish chemically. An oil-and-paraffin base (Mannol 9900, heavy paraffinic distillate / mineral oil with calcium sulfonate) does it another way. It circulates with the oil, and the calcium sulfonate detergent holds the loosened muck in suspension so it flows out when you pull the plug. Same destination, two routes: one dissolves, the other suspends and rinses out.

Neither one lifts hard, baked-on carbon. A pour-in flush hasn’t got the time or the muscle for that in 10-15 minutes of idling. So the honest promise is soft deposits gone, not the engine scrubbed back to bare metal.

Which composition is stronger at dissolving deposits?

On raw dissolving power, Motul takes it. A light hydrocarbon solvent handles harder deposits better than an oil base does - that’s the chemistry, not a lab result. The SDS doesn’t score cleaning, so I’m reading it off the base: a light solvent cuts varnish and sludge harder than oil. That puts Motul at mild-to-medium and Mannol 9900 at mild. Gentler isn’t worse - on some engines gentler is exactly what you want.

One detail worth pulling out of the Motul sheets: how strong it is depends on the market. The old French “Engine Clean” (réf. 109458, 2015) ran 2-25% aromatics in the carrier - a much harsher solvent. The US (2019) and German (2023) versions came down to below 2% aromatics. Fewer aromatics, gentler on seals, still a solvent underneath. Poland gets the low-aromatic EU line.

Which is safer - what do the SDS hazards say?

On the hazard sheet, Mannol 9900 is the milder one. The oil version lists no hazardous ingredient at all. The surfactant version flags only the trace isotridecanol below 0. Low, overall.

That’s not “dangerous when you use it right,” it’s the standard label for this class of carrier. Either way, you use them the same: pour into warm oil, idle the engine about 10-15 minutes, then drain and change the filter.

Do Motul and Mannol contain ZDDP? There’s no single answer

You can’t just say “Motul has no ZDDP” or “Mannol has no ZDDP.” It depends on the specific product and market. ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) is an anti-wear/lubricity additive, and both brands have variants that carry it and variants that don’t.

In the mainstream 300 ml bottles sold in Poland, no sheet declares ZDDP - not Motul Engine Clean Auto (the low-aromatic EU line), not Mannol Motor Flush 9900. Grab a different item from the same brand, though, and the picture changes:

  • Motul “Engine Clean” FR (réf. 109458, 2015) - the sheet lists ZDDP (phosphorodithioic acid, zinc salts, CAS 68649-42-3) at 2.5-<10%.
  • Mannol 9009 Professional (450 ml, FR 2025) - the sheet lists ZDDP (CAS 84605-29-8) at ≤1%, alongside an oil base, a light C7-C9 solvent (10-15%) and an ester (bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, 5-10%).

So don’t ask “does brand X have ZDDP.” Ask “does THIS item have ZDDP,” then check the sheet. I’ve laid it out in a separate table below.

Variants and ZDDP table - why “has it or not” depends on the item

This table is the whole point. Same maker. Different part numbers, different markets, and a different composition on the sheet. If you want the ZDDP additive - or you’d rather steer clear of it - read the specific product, not the logo.

Point being, “does Motul or Mannol have ZDDP” is the wrong question. Each brand has one variant with ZDDP (Motul FR 109458, Mannol 9009 Professional) and variants without it (the mainstream 300 ml). Composition belongs to the item, not the badge.

And what is Mannol 9990 - is that a flush too?

Two things in Mannol’s range are easy to mix up, so pull them apart. Motor Flush 9900 is your before-the-oil-change flush. Mannol 9990 Engine Oil System Conditioner (350 ml, UK sheet 2021) is more a conditioner than a classic flush - built on hydrotreated lubricating oils (petroleum) C20-50 (60-80%), plus paraffinic distillate (below 40%) and an acrylic copolymer (below 10%). Section 3 of the sheet reads “Dangerous components: Void” - nothing classified as hazardous.

Gentler than the 9900, even - oil-based, conditioning as much as cleaning. If you want to shift harder deposits, this isn’t the direction; the 9990 is a light refresh of the system. I bring it up because one family gives you three different jobs: a mild conditioner (9990), a mild oil-based flush (9900), and a professional version with solvent and ZDDP (9009).

Which flush should you choose by engine condition?

Two things decide it: how neglected the engine is, and how fragile the seals are.

  • Engine with visible deposits, dark oil, skipped changes → you want dissolving power. The solvent is the pick here, Motul Engine Clean Auto. A light hydrocarbon lifts soft varnish better than an oil base.
  • Older engine, high mileage, nervous about the seals and shaft seals → play it gentle. Mannol Motor Flush 9900, oil-and-paraffin base, lowest hazard profile, mildest of the lot.
  • Engine serviced reasonably on schedule, just a “preventive” flush before a change → either mainstream bottle does the job. After that it’s price and what’s on the shelf, and I’m not ranking those here.

There’s a third road, too. When the deposit is harder than a gentle oil base will shift, but you still care about the seals. How do you actually use a flush like this?

Same drill for both, and it follows from the “before the oil change” job. Pour it into warm, old oil right before you drain. Start up, let it idle for roughly 10-15 minutes - no load, don’t drive it. In that time the flush circulates with the oil and loosens the soft deposits. Then drain, dirt and all, and you must change the oil filter - a good chunk of what came loose is sitting in there.

You don’t drive on a flush and you don’t leave it in for later. One shot, tied to one oil change.

Is Motul stronger than Mannol?
For dissolving deposits, yes. Motul’s a solvent base (light hydrocarbons C10-C13), which lands it at mild-to-medium - the SDS doesn’t score cleaning itself. Mannol 9900, on an oil-and-paraffin base, is gentler. Stronger still doesn’t mean better for every engine.

Does Mannol Motor Flush 9900 contain ZDDP?
Not in the 9900 sheet (PL/IT). ZDDP shows up only in Mannol 9009 Professional (≤1% on the FR 2025 sheet). Two different products.

Does Motul Engine Clean Auto contain ZDDP?
The mainstream EU/PL version (the <2% aromatics line) doesn’t declare it. The old French “Engine Clean” (réf. 109458, 2015) carried ZDDP at 2.5-<10%.

Which flush is safer for old seals?
Both read low for seal risk on the sheets. Mannol 9900 has the lowest overall hazard profile - oil base, nothing or only a trace classified - so on very fragile, aged seals it’s the gentler bet.

Will a flush repair the engine or reduce oil consumption caused by mechanical wear?
No. A flush takes out deposits, soft sludge and varnish. It won’t reverse mechanical wear. It won’t regenerate rings or seal a worn component.

How long do you keep the engine on the flush, and can you drive on it?
Same method for both: add to warm oil, idle about 10-15 minutes, then drain and change the filter without fail. You don’t drive on a flush and you don’t save it for later. It’s a one-time additive, parked and idling, not something you take on the road.

Is TEC 2000 a solvent or an oil base?
Solvent in character - an advanced blend of hydrocarbon solvents on an aromatic base, with an additive package, chlorine-free and kerosene-free.
