The symptoms of failing injectors are always broadly the same: rough running, harder starting, a drop in power, higher fuel consumption and smoke from the exhaust. The trouble is that one set of symptoms covers three different faults, and each one is fixed differently. Below: how to tell them apart before you spend money.
Clogged, worn or leaking? They are not the same thing
People say “bad injectors” and mean three quite different things. The distinction matters, because it decides whether a cheap additive will do or whether the injectors have to come out of the head.

The first case is the commonest, and that is good news, because it is often reversible. The third is the most dangerous and the least talked about.
The symptoms, one by one, and what each points to
Rough running and hunting idle
The earliest sign. One cylinder gets a different quantity from the rest, so the engine runs unevenly and the idle wanders. Note whether it clears once the engine warms up: if it does, that points to dirt rather than mechanical wear.
Hard starting, and the timing is the clue
What matters here is when it refuses to fire.
- Long cold start, hot start fine usually means poor atomisation, so dirt or wear.
- Long hot start, cold start fine is the classic signature of a leaking injector. After shutdown fuel seeps into the cylinder, the mixture goes too rich and cranking drags on.
Loss of power and weaker acceleration
Instead of atomising into a fine mist, the spray comes out in coarser droplets. The fuel does not burn completely and part of the energy leaves through the exhaust rather than driving the car.
Higher fuel consumption
The ECU sees disturbed combustion and tries to compensate with quantity, so the bill at the pump grows before any warning light comes on.
Exhaust smoke, and the colour means something
- Black: too much fuel, too little air. On a diesel this is the commonest pointer towards injectors.
- Thick white: fuel is not igniting at all and leaves unburnt, or coolant is reaching the chamber. The second case is a different and more serious story.
- Bluish: that is usually oil, so the trail leads to the rings or valve stem seals, not the injectors.
Knocking and harsh running
On a diesel, uneven delivery is audible as a distinctive knock, louder on a cold engine. It is worth distinguishing from a knock from the bottom end, which means something else entirely.
Check Engine and skewed fuel trims
The ECU logs per-cylinder deviation faults. The light alone settles nothing, but a trim readout does, and that is covered below.
A smell of fuel and a rising oil level
An overlooked symptom, and the most telling one. A leaking injector seeps fuel into the cylinder even with the engine stopped. Some of it runs down the bore into the sump and dilutes the oil. If the dipstick shows more than you put in and the oil smells of fuel, that calls for action rather than postponement. Diluted oil loses viscosity, and the oil film thins exactly where it should not.
Careful: half of these symptoms fit something else too
This is the commonest diagnostic mistake. Before pulling the injectors, rule out the cheaper causes, because they present almost identically:
- Plugs and coils on a petrol engine. Rough running and hesitation look the same, and replacement costs a fraction of reconditioning.
- A clogged fuel filter or a weak pump. Power loss under load, with a reasonably normal idle.
- An intake leak. False air upsets the mixture and skews the trims exactly as injectors do.
- A blocked DPF or a faulty EGR. Power loss and higher consumption, with the fuel system innocent.
- A faulty crankcase breather. It too can upset the mixture and raise consumption.
How to check it properly
- Read the fuel trims. A diagnostic tool shows per-cylinder deviation. One cylinder clearly out of line with the rest is the strongest evidence you can get without dismantling anything.
- The return flow test. The basic check on a common rail diesel: measuring cylinders are connected to the return lines and the fuel coming back from each injector is compared. The one giving back noticeably more is the suspect.
- Cylinder cut-out. The tool disables each injector in turn. If disabling one changes nothing, that cylinder was not contributing anyway.
- The test bench. This settles it definitively, but the injectors have to come out of the head first.
What next: cleaning, reconditioning or replacement
Cleaning
Makes sense for dirt, which is the commonest case. A fuel additive works gently and preventively, while ultrasonic cleaning works harder but requires removing the injectors. What cleaning will not do: it will not rebuild a worn needle and it will not seal an injector that leaks.
Reconditioning
This is the answer to wear and to leakage. The precision parts are replaced and the injector is calibrated on a bench. Usually much cheaper than a new set; more on that under injector reconditioning.
Replacement
When the body itself is damaged or reconditioning does not pay. If you replace one, check the others, because they have done the same mileage.
Will a fuel additive be enough?
The honest answer: sometimes yes, sometimes it is money wasted, and it depends entirely on which of the three faults you have.
For dirt, an additive in the tank makes sense, because it dissolves deposits on the nozzle and restores the spray pattern. That is the usual scenario on a car used mainly around town.
For mechanical wear and for a leaking injector, no additive will help. Chemistry does not rebuild metal and does not seal a seat. Anyone promising otherwise is selling hope.
One thing worth separating once and for all: a lubrication-system flush does not clean injectors. It works in the oil circuit, and the injectors sit in the fuel system. Two separate systems and separate products, as set out under engine oil flush versus injector cleaner.
Common questions
How long can you drive with a faulty injector?
With dirt, comfortably as far as the next service. With a leaking injector, do not put it off, because fuel dilutes the oil, and in the worst case excess fuel in the cylinder can wash the oil film off the bore.
Do the symptoms differ between diesel and petrol?

Do they all have to be replaced at once?
There is no rule that says so, but if the set has high mileage, replacing one often means a return trip to the workshop a few months later.
Can you identify this without diagnostics?
The direction, yes, from the symptoms on this list. Which cylinder and which fault, no. A trim readout, or a return flow test on a diesel, costs little and saves a lot of guessing.
